NinjaTrader trading hours: templates, time zones and missing bars

A session filter can look like downtime. Compare the clocks, holiday exceptions and data series before treating the gap as a connection failure.

Quick answer

A connected chart can stop adding bars because its Trading Hours template excludes the current time. Compare the affected series, template time zone, display time zone and actual exchange schedule before diagnosing an outage.

Read the session clock and display clock separately

In General settings, Time zone controls how NinjaTrader displays charts and market data. Its default follows the local PC time zone. That display setting answers a different question from the time zone assigned to a session template.

Clock or scheduleWhat to compare
Trading Hours templateInterpret the session start and end in the template's selected time zone.
General > Time zoneRead the chart timestamp in the configured display zone.
Exchange scheduleUse the product, date and time zone stated by the exchange.

Compare one instant, including its date

For example, on October 5, 2026, 08:30 in Chicago is 09:30 in New York. Those labels describe the same instant. This is a time-zone example, not an exchange opening time.

When comparing a local computer with a VPS or a colleague's chart, write down the date and named zone for each timestamp. A bare value such as 08:30 cannot tell you whether the feeds disagree. Convert that same instant before comparing bars; do not shift a session boundary merely to make two clock labels match.

Find the template the affected series actually uses

Right-click the chart and open Data Series. Select the affected entry in Applied, then read Trading Hours. On a chart with several series, inspect each relevant entry.

A saved Chart Template can override manually entered Data Series settings, including Trading Hours. If a newly created chart has an unexpected gap, check which Chart Template was applied before editing session definitions.

Open Tools > Trading Hours and select the named template. Read its start day, end day and times; an overnight session can cross a calendar date. EOD marks the final session of a trading day, with the following session belonging to the next trading date.

Check the holiday override against the exchange

Inspect the template's Holidays entry for the trading date. Full Day removes that day's sessions; Early Close and Late Open shorten its boundaries. Replace substitutes a session definition, while Modify retains intervening sessions. A normal weekly row alone does not explain a holiday gap.

For CME products, open the Globex section of the current trading-hours calendar, select the date and filter the product. CME states that times are US Central unless otherwise specified, and schedules can change. Do not apply a different product's hours to the contract on your chart.

Read the phase as well as the time. CME PREOPEN allows order entry, modification and cancellation but no matching; OPEN begins continuous matching. A connected platform during preopen therefore does not establish that trades should already be printing.

An unfinished bar can close at the session boundary

Break at EOD determines whether a bar stops at the session boundary or continues until its completion criteria are met. With it enabled, a range bar can finish before reaching its normal range. With it disabled, the bar can continue building across the boundary.

When two charts disagree around a close, compare Break at EOD along with the bar type and interval. This setting can change indicator and strategy calculations. A short final bar is not, by itself, proof of missing data.

Check the strategy separately from a moving chart

A chart-based strategy has its own selected Data Series, Account and Calculate mode. Inspect the Configured strategy entry; movement elsewhere in the workspace does not confirm its input series. Also review Exit on close and its seconds setting, because session boundaries can govern position-closing behavior.

If Ninja Watchdog reports that strategy recovery is waiting for market open, compare the reported next opening with that strategy's Trading Hours template. This wait follows the primary data series' session boundaries. It does not independently establish the exchange status of every secondary instrument in a multi-instrument strategy.

If the relevant session is open and the same contract is stale across windows, continue with the market-data guide. If prices move elsewhere but this chart does not, use the chart-specific guide. Those paths cover provider subscriptions and display problems without changing the intended trading schedule.
