NinjaTrader recovery tools compared: restart, reconnect, and strategy restore

A reconnect feature, a crash monitor, and a strategy restore tool cover different parts of recovery. Here is how to compare the documented capabilities.

Illustration of three distinct repair tools representing process, connection, and strategy recovery.

Quick answer

Ninja Watchdog and HeartBeat document platform relaunch, connection recovery, and strategy restoration. GFREQ WatchDog documents NT8 Live reconnect and crash relaunch. CrossTrade Data Watchdog detects stale market data inside its NT8 add-on. Choose by the interruption you need to recover from and verify the required settings.

  • A reconnect feature needs a running platform; crash recovery must relaunch it first.
  • Strategy restoration depends on startup settings and account readiness.
  • The comparison below covers documented features, with unverified capabilities labeled.

Match the tool to the interruption

A crash monitor detects a closed application. A connection monitor detects a lost provider session. A data watchdog detects missing ticks even when the connection appears active. Strategy restoration is a further step after the platform and connection return.

This comparison uses official product pages checked September 15, 2026. Ninja Watchdog publishes this guide; these are documented capabilities, not results from independent performance testing.

Documented recovery features

A feature absent from the reviewed documentation is unverified, rather than proven unavailable.

Documented recovery scope, checked September 15, 2026.

ToolDocumented recovery scopeImportant boundary
Ninja WatchdogNinjaTrader relaunch, account reconnect, strategy restore, and cloud monitoring. Email alerts today; SMS and WhatsApp coming soon.Runs with the Windows trading environment; recovery depends on the account, platform and provider being available.
HeartBeat by First Light BeaconPlatform relaunch, watched-account reconnect, selected-strategy restore, and scheduled NinjaTrader restart. Its product page says it does not restart Windows or the VPS.
GFREQ WatchDogNT8 log/process monitoring, NT8 Live reconnect, crash relaunch, and optional login fill.Telegram/Discord alerts are documented; selected-strategy restore is not established by the reviewed product page.
CrossTrade Data WatchdogWatches reference-instrument ticks per connection and starts reconnection when data becomes stale. This documented feature lives in the CrossTrade NT8 add-on; the page does not establish full Windows or crashed-platform recovery.

Windows recovery and monitoring boundaries

Ninja Watchdog combines a Windows application with cloud monitoring. It attempts platform relaunch, account reconnection and restoration of previously running strategies. Cloud monitoring can report when the computer stops checking in. Recovery still requires an available Windows environment, network and provider.

HeartBeat documents scheduled NinjaTrader restarts and configured recovery of watched connections and selected strategies. Its page explicitly excludes restarting Windows or the VPS. A platform restart schedule therefore needs a separate plan for a host reboot.

Provider reconnect and stale-data boundaries

GFREQ WatchDog monitors NT8 processes and logs, attempts NT8 Live reconnection, and supports crash relaunch with optional login fill. Its page documents Telegram and Discord alerts. Confirm your provider and required strategy handling before relying on those functions.

CrossTrade Data Watchdog monitors reference-instrument ticks per connection. During market hours, stale data past the configured timeout triggers reconnection. Because the documented feature runs inside the CrossTrade NT8 add-on, this page does not establish recovery when NinjaTrader itself has stopped.

Check positions when a strategy restarts

NinjaTrader Start Behavior controls how a strategy handles its calculated position and the account position at startup. Some synchronization options can submit reconciliation orders. Initial synchronization also does not guarantee continued alignment.

Record the account, instrument, strategy instance, startup setting and working orders before a simulation test. Compare those same items after recovery. An enabled strategy proves its enabled state; it does not prove that positions and orders match your intended setup.

Compare results in your configuration

Hosting and recovery software address separate dependencies. Ask the VPS provider about host availability and startup access, and the recovery vendor about application and strategy handling.

  1. Test one controlled interruption in simulation: platform close, connection loss or stale data.
  2. Record what the tool detected, attempted and completed, including elapsed time and any failed step.
  3. Check fresh data, the selected account and strategy, then verify that the alert reaches its destination.
  4. Repeat after changing the provider, strategy, platform or Windows startup configuration.

Common questions

Does Ninja Watchdog send SMS or WhatsApp alerts?

Email alerts are available today for recovery, trade and order events, and monitored-computer outages. SMS and WhatsApp alerts are coming soon; no release date is stated here.

Can I use this comparison as a performance ranking?

No. It compares published feature scope. Detection speed, recovery success and provider compatibility require testing in the configuration you intend to use.
