Quick answer
NinjaTrader 8 hotkeys depend on the active window. Check the assignment category and window focus first. Order-entry shortcuts also require Use order entry hot keys in Tools > Options > Trading. An open modal dialog temporarily disables shortcuts.
Assign the shortcut and resolve conflicts
From the Control Center, open Tools > Hot Keys. Select a window category on the left, click the action's assignment field, then press your chosen key combination. Esc cancels recording; the X beside an assignment removes it.
If a combination conflicts with an existing assignment, NinjaTrader prompts you to reassign it. Review the action name before accepting. To keep a reference of the resulting assignments, right-click in the manager and choose Print Hot Keys.
A shortcut's category determines where it works
Global refers to NinjaTrader's windows; it does not mean an operating-system shortcut that controls NinjaTrader while you work in another application.
A modal dialog takes focus until you dismiss it. NinjaTrader disables all hotkeys while one is open, so a shortcut can be assigned correctly yet temporarily do nothing.
| Assignment category | Required focus |
|---|---|
| A specific window | The corresponding NinjaTrader window must be active. |
| Global | Available across NinjaTrader windows, except while a modal dialog has focus. |
| Order Entry | An order-entry window must be active; order-entry hotkeys must also be enabled. |
Order-entry shortcuts need their own enablement setting
In the Control Center, open Tools > Options > Trading and check Use order entry hot keys. Assigning a combination in the manager alone does not enable order entry.
The action applies to the active order-entry window. With several charts or SuperDOM windows open, click the intended window and read its account and instrument before using a shortcut. The keyboard combination does not itself choose a different account.
If only Sim101 is available, investigate the account restriction separately. If Chart Trader's side panel is missing, restore its display before diagnosing the shortcut.
“Last order” does not mean the newest ATM stop or target
NinjaTrader defines the last order used by these actions as the last submitted order excluding stops and targets generated by an ATM Strategy. A Cancel last Order shortcut therefore is not a general command to cancel the most recently created protective order.
Close Position acts on the open position in the active order-entry window. Close ATM Strategy cancels pending orders and exits positions activated by that ATM Strategy. These commands have different scopes; choose the action by its documented effect.
Enter or Space can repeat a button without a custom hotkey
The Trading options also contain Last order button keyboard focus. When enabled, a clicked order button retains keyboard focus, allowing Enter or Space to activate it again. If either key repeats an order action, inspect this setting as well as your custom assignments.
Confirm order placement is another separate option that adds a confirmation popup. Neither setting changes which action you assigned in the Hot Keys manager.
